Timeline
July 2023 to February 2025

NDTV Profit is one of the largest media groups in India and the country's leading business and financial news media company, relaunched from its previous masthead, BQ Prime, in December 2023.

NDTV came to SoluteLabs on the strength of our earlier work for another publisher, The Ken, whose apps were featured on the App Store twice. We built the NDTV Profit iOS and Android apps and the single sign-on behind them. Both apps read from the content management system and the subscription engine the publisher already ran on, integrating with them rather than replacing them.

“My experience working with the SoluteLabs team has been really, really good—Prakash, Karan, and the team have worked really well on the NDTV Profit app, and we're happy, satisfied, and excited to build more with them.”

Vaibhav Khanna

Head of Product & Subscriptions, NDTV Profit

Solution

We built the two apps natively and fitted them to the systems already in place, so the publisher kept its content workflow and its subscription logic and gained a mobile product around them.

The sign-on was the one piece with no incumbent to fit. It was designed from scratch for the reader base of the whole group, which is why it outlived this engagement and now runs beyond this masthead.

Deliverables

NDTV Profit iOS App

  • Stories, sections and breaking coverage read straight from Quintype, the content system the newsroom team already publishes into.
  • The Markets, Budget and Elections sections render as hybrid HTML inside the native app, with deep linking preserved for the native components around them.

NDTV Profit Android App

  • Accesstype, part of the same publishing suite, carries subscriptions, and in-app purchase runs alongside it for paywalled stories.
  • Adjustable font sizes and a light and dark mode, so the reading experience holds on the range of devices this audience actually uses.

Single Sign-On Platform

  • Built from scratch to replace a proprietary sign-on, sized for the reader base of the whole group rather than one masthead.
  • Now adopted across the wider NDTV family, so a reader carries one account instead of one per property.

Outcomes

The apps are live and the sign-on outlived the engagement. Here is what shipped and what it carries.

A relaunch that made the front page

  • Both apps went live in December 2023, alongside the rebrand from BQ Prime.

  • The launch ran with a full front-page advertisement in The Economic Times and across India's major dailies, on a date fixed before the build was finished.

One account across the group

  • The sign-on built for this masthead is now adopted across the wider NDTV family.

  • It replaced a proprietary system, so readers hold one account rather than one per property.

Two apps, running under the client's own name

  • The iOS and Android apps are live on both stores and are operated by NDTV Profit as their own products.

  • SoluteLabs worked on them from July 2023 to February 2025, a nineteen month engagement that has since closed.
